Anniversary cake

On our first anniversary, Kelly and I celebrated the time-honored tradition of eating the top of our wedding cake. The notion of eating a year-old cake may initially seem disgusting, but actually we were quite surprised at how well-preserved and tasty it was. My mom made the cakes for our wedding, and she took it upon herself to preserve and store the top section of our wedding cake.

In order to store the cake for such a long period of time, she first wrapped the entire cake layer in saran wrap. Top to bottom, and all around, it was well wrapped. Next, it was wrapped in a layer of aluminum foil. It sounds simple enough, but we’ve heard some horror stories from people who just stuck their cake in the freezer without wrapping it, and a year later they take a single bite of frost-bitten ugliness before dropping the rest of it into the trashcan. That’s a shame. I’m glad my mom knew enough about cake embalming to preserve it so we could share memories with each other, our friends, and our families. (it was a hefty chunk of cake!)

Married life

Kelly and I were married on October 25. It’s a great feeling to be done with that planning and stress, and we’re getting settled in. Married life is good. Thanks to all who attended our wedding and/or sent well-wishes our way. We’ll be posting some wedding pictures eventually, so stay tuned.

A tale of soggy cardboard and creatures of the deep

Kelly and I had a nice three-day weekend. Saturday morning we went whale watching and saw a blue whale, which was quite cool. I’ll post a picture later. Yesterday, we took the day off work and went to Sea World. Neither of us had been lately, so it was fun.

For some reason, Sea World gives out cardboard drinking straws with their plastic smoothie cups. I failed to notice this until I had gagged from a mouthful of soggy cardboard. Gross.

But…what does it do?

The Harmony RF Remote Control is the most expensive remote I’ve ever seen, although I must admit I’ve never looked for a more expensive one. It looks like a cell phone that can’t flip shut and can’t make calls. Although it’s nice that you don’t need line-of-sight to the TV to use it, I don’t plan on getting one anytime in the near…ever. It’s probably cheaper to just hire the neighbor kids to change the channel for you.

Time for the quarterly update

It’s just about time for my quarterly blog entry. I could never remember the password for adding entries, so they were sparse for a while. I’ve finally memorized it, so there may be a flurry of interesting posts coming up. Shocking, I know.

Fantastic Contraption is a fun, physics-based flash game. After you complete a level, it allows you to view the solutions of other players. Many of them involve creating catapults, lifting arms, tank treads, etc. The solutions with a 5/5 rating are usually quite ingenious and fun to watch.

The Roku is a standalone player that hooks up to your television and Internet connection and allows you to watch Netflix’s “Watch it Now” online content without using a computer. The online selection for Netflix is pitiful, but they are gradually adding more TV shows and a few decent movies.

Almost Christmas time

So I got a new blog all set up for myself, and have been so busy I haven’t gotten around to posting anything yet.

Here’s a ridiculous scene from an old Batman episode.
